In a trip that has exceeded my expectations this stood out as an overwhelming disappointment. (Only reason it has 2 circles and not one is the environment was gorgeous, but... read more that’s bot the doing of the operator).
We booked this based on the website that promised many amenities that were important to us and a true glamping experience. turned out not to be the case. Here are my gripes:
1. The website says heater. There was a heater in the room that started off warm at best when we got there. By midnight it was ice cold and we had absolutely nothing heating the tent. And it was frigid. Might as well have slept under the stars and at least enjoyed the view. By contrast several others we ran into who stayed elsewhere bragged about how warm and cozy their rooms were and how they had hot water bottles and hot showers awaiting them when they woke.
2. The website and reviews talk about a camel ride. The ride is a great experience (likely in part because the camel handlers are contracted out and not golden camp staff. But what they failed to tell us at any point leading up to the stay including in the confirmation, on the website, when we called to coordinate our meet up, when we met up to ride the camels, when we arrived at camp or at any point until literally when we were dropped off is that camels are an extra 25 euro per person cash only. Our driver unloaded us and unceremoniously demanded 50 euro cash because “Hassan told us” which was a lie. We had to pay but it felt dirty and extremely unprofessional.
3. That was not the worst thing that driver did. They provide transportation back in the morning and honestly next time I’ll take the camel. First they are so disorganized they didn’t even tell us when the transport was and when I asked they said whenever we wanted. Of course when I told them we wanted to go back they told me we’d missed it and had to wait for all the cars to return from the village (while puffing a cigarette in my face I might add). I’m pregnant and we had my 3 year old son with me. They stuffed the three of us plus three others in a 4x4, and despite clearly carrying a toddler and me telling them I’m pregnant they guy drove like a maniac. It was worst than a roller coaster ride because half the seat belts didn’t work. My son was flying around. And at one point the driver tried to drive with one hand while answering the phone. Total disregard and unsafe. I wouldn’t risk it again, had I known.
4. Website also said playground, child friendly buffet and balconies. With a toddler this was one of reasons we booked. All lies.
5. This place is totally disorganized. Beyond what I already specifically called out there was just general disorganization and disregard for guests. We got off the camels and found no one to greet us. People started to crowd around one guy (although plenty of staff hung around useless) and turned out he was assigning rooms. We finally got our room and then we’re told different times for the start of dinner. We were also told to not use electricity because they might need to use a generator which would be expensive. At dinner they moved us around different tables pointlessly. And in the morning no one even mentioned breakfast time or cake to tell us about it. There was no signs of any organization of any activities beyond the music and fire pit after dinner. Generally a lot of guys standing around joking with each other and smoking cigs instead of working.
Overall, this will go down as a regret because every other sleep accommodation we’ve had was exceptional and we heard exceptional things about other camps, which also happened to be cheaper. So definitely do glamping in the desert but pick somewhere else that actually gives you the service you expect and doesn’t try to gauge you, ignore you, or nearly kill you in a 4x4.
